Hot Chocolate, herbaceous peony
Notable characteristics: Outstanding anemone form flower with deep red-black- burgundy petals surrounding an inner center of deep red and touches of gold. Very unusual, rich color combination. A new favorite peony here!
* Note: this one is hard to photograph, and petals reflect the light, so it appears lighter in photos than it is to the eye.
Deer resistant. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide free. Grown in Connecticut.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: P. lactiflora, Henry Sass 1971.
Growth habit and size at maturity : Compact grower, fits easily into the garden. Grows to 2.5' tall and 2.5' wide. NO staking required, good landscape peony.
Flower form and size: Anemone form, 5-6".
Flower fragrance: Light, sweet scent.
Bloom time: Mid-season blooming herbaceous peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May or first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.
Plant size: 4-5 'eyes' or buds with proportional roots. This size plant will most likely flower its first or second season.
