Paeonia, Perfumed Herbaceous Peony Pair

$ 55 $ 76
Nothing quite compares to the fragrance of a peony blossom. In his fascinating book, The Botany of Desire, which explored the evolutionary give and take between plants and humans, Michael Pollen captured the intoxicating Dionysian experience of inhaling a peony blossom as "momentarily to leave our rational selves behind to be transported as only a haunting fragrance can transport us. This is what is meant by ecstasy: to be taken out of ourselves."

We are often asked by customers to recommend a fragrant peony for their garden. These are two of our most fragrant herbaceous peonies - guaranteed to induce a state of blissful reverie!

This pair included one each of the following peonies:

Edulis Superba

A classic lactiflora cultivar which has been in the US for a century. This description from Peonies: The Manual of the American Peony Society, edited by James Boyd (1928): "Very fragrant. Medium size. Guard and center petals bright old-rose pink, with a collar of distinctly lighter narrow petals. Usually develops a crown as the flower ages. Extremely floriferous; with excellent foliage..."

Duchesse de Nemours

One of the oldest cultivated herbaceous peonies! Full double form white flowers that deepen to a canary yellow and pale green at the center. Prolific plants provide many blossoms, very popular as a cut flower.

Bloom time: These mid season peonies bloom in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second week of June.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9.

Plant sizes: 4-5 'eyes' or buds with proportional roots. This size plant will most likely flower in its second spring after planting, though many did bloom the first year.

When we ship: WINTER/SPRING 2023
