Paeonia, 'Great Lady' hybrid herbaceous peony

Notable characteristics: High-held single blooms of deep shining reddish-pink. Petals have a look of crinkled satin when they open. Lower growing plant with strong stems, does not require staking. In our garden, 'Great Lady' blooms two weeks earlier than lactiflora type herbaceous peonies. A slow growing, rather dwarf plant. Spectacular color.

Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: P. lobata hybrid group, Saunders, 1943. Rarely offered for sale.

Growth habit and size at maturity: Upright, grows to 2.5' tall and 3' wide. Very good stem strength.

Flower form and size: Single, 4-5" and upward facing. Excellent variety for landscape planting or cut flowers.

Flower fragrance: Very light.

Bloom time:  Early season hybrid peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the second and third week of May, with the tree peonies.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 3-8.

Plant size: 2-3 'eye' plants with a well developed root system. This size plant will most likely flower its first or second spring in the ground. Please note that because of the dwarf nature of this cultivar that divisions will be smaller than that of other peonies.
