Paeonia, 'Gloria's Angel' hybrid herbaceous peony

Notable characteristics: Perfectly formed, shell-pink and white single blossoms are subtly overlaid with darker pink speckles. Lower growing plant with strong stems, does not require staking. In our garden, 'Gloria's Angel' blooms one week earlier than lactiflora type herbaceous peonies. Produces both fertile pollen and seeds.

We are excited to offer this new hybrid herbaceous peony . This is a plant which we have observed and propagated in the nursery for more than a decade. It is an open-pollinated seedling which has a distinguished history. The seed parent plant was one of a group of peonies which we received from the breeder, Chris Lanning, in the early 1990s. Lanning, in turn, had acquired the progenitors from the Saunders nursery. Its genetic background is complex, and contains both P. obovata subsp. willmottiae and P. daurica subsp. macrophylla. The English botanist, Martin Page, helped us recognize this as a unique flower, unlike any other he had seen in all of his research and travels for his fine book, 'The Gardener's Peony.' We named it 'Gloria's Angel' on the occasion of the ninetieth birthday of a beloved aunt.

Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Peony Heaven hybrid, new introduction, to be registered 2023.

Growth habit and size at maturity: Upright, grows to 2.5' tall and 3.5' wide. Very good stem strength.

Flower form and size: Single form, 5"  diameter and upward facing. Excellent variety for landscape planting or cut flowers.

Flower fragrance: Very light.

Bloom time: Early season hybrid peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third and fourth weeks of May.

Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 3-8.

Plant size: 4-5 'eye' plants with a well developed root system.
