Herbaceous
Peonies
Peony Heaven herbaceous peonies are all hybrids of the
species, Paeonia lactiflora, a native plant of China.
For many years, herbaceous peonies in China were solely
grown for herbal medicine, used for relieving pain and
nourishing the blood. Their name in Chinese, shao yu, means
medical root.
Contemporary China has come to appreciate the decorative
value of these hardy, long-lived, carefree perennials.
Choose a site where you can let them grow undisturbed to
form magnificent clumps. They require full sun for best
blooms, though 6-8 hours will do. The soil should be fertile
and well drained. Herbaceous peonies will bloom in zones 4
to 8. (Unlike tree peonies, these require more cold and
dormancy and will not bloom reliably in zone 9.) Plants are
shipped with easy to read and detailed planting
instructions.
The plant reaches a height of 30-36 inches, with flowers 5-6 inches in
size. Our varieties will bring delightful fragrance to your garden and
are excellent as cut flowers. We ship sturdy roots with 4 to 5 eyes in
the fall, unlike many nurseries which will send you only 2 eye divisions.
Our plants are likely to bloom their first spring and as they settle in,
will become larger clumps every year. In the fall, herbaceous peonies
die down and are cut back. All Chinese herbaceous peonies bloom 2 weeks
later than the tree peonies, thus extending the bloom in your garden.
