Herbaceous Peonies Peony Heaven herbaceous peonies are all hybrids of the species, Paeonia lactiflora, a native plant of China. For many years, herbaceous peonies in China were solely grown for herbal medicine, used for relieving pain and nourishing the blood. Their name in Chinese, shao yu, means medical root. Contemporary China has come to appreciate the decorative value of these hardy, long-lived, carefree perennials. Choose a site where you can let them grow undisturbed to form magnificent clumps. They require full sun for best blooms, though 6-8 hours will do. The soil should be fertile and well drained. Herbaceous peonies will bloom in zones 4 to 8. (Unlike tree peonies, these require more cold and dormancy and will not bloom reliably in zone 9.) Plants are shipped with easy to read and detailed planting instructions.
