Peony Information

We hope that you can find all the peony information you need on our website. If by chance you still cannot find what you are looking for, we invite you to call us toll free at 1-860-283-1042. At Cricket Hill Garden, we strive to provide the most exceptional customer service to people who buy our peonies as well as to people who are just interested in learning a bit more about peonies. Peonies are our passion, and we enjoy sharing our passion with others.

Basic peony information typically covers such matters as transplanting peonies, sunlight, water, soil, and the diverse varieties of peonies. Tree peonies grow in USDA Zones 4 through 9 in the United States, which range from southern Minnesota to California. Tree peonies thrive under the right conditions, which means they require high quality soil, excellent water drainage, and the right amount of sunlight.

If you want your tree peonies to thrive, they must have at least 4 to 5 hours of sunlight each day, with morning sun being the best. If your peonies get too much sun, the flowers will quickly fade, and if they get too little sun, the flowers won't bloom to their maximum ability. Dappled sun works well for tree peonies, as these plants were originally found in nature on Chinese hillsides. Over-watering will destroy the root system of your peonies; therefore you need to make certain that there is adequate drainage.

Herbaceous peonies have a range of USDA Zones 3 through 8. Warmer climates in Zone 9 will not likely have good success of flowering, because herbaceous peonies prefer colder winters. These peonies also prefer full sun, or at minimum 6 hours a day to bloom well. Herbaceous peonies also seem slightly more tolerant of wetness, but would prefer excellent soil drainage.

Important Peony Information
Peonies can sustain themselves on little water once they are fully established, so it is important that you do not plant them near any automatic sprinkler systems that will drench the root system. The soil should have a pH level between 6.5 and 7.0 for optimal growth. When you take this peony information to heart and follow our directions for growing healthy peonies, you will get infinite enjoyment from your garden. Each spring, your peonies will bloom and open up into the most spectacular flowers that exude a most exquisite fragrance. Your tender loving care now will pay off in spades later. Call us if you have any questions about properly caring for your beautiful peonies.
