In China's Gansu Province, in the far northwest, they grow hundreds of variations of rockii tree peonies. One of our biggest problems is sorting them out and trying to evaluate which ones are best. This particular one, known as "High Ranking Official" delighted us as fast growing, and quick to bloom in the double form. Flowers are very ruffled, deep reddish-magenta with darker purple tones, 8-9" in diameter, in a multi-petal golden circle form. In the center of the flower, at the base of golden stamens. the petals are marked with a dark maroon flare. It is a complex and very beautiful flower. Blooms are exceptionally fragrant and are held well above the foliage. All rockii hybrids are vigorous and tall growing, and extremely floriferous. Expect these to grow into large specimen shrubs, multi-branched, 5 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide by the 8 -10th year. If space is an issue, they may be pruned after blooming to keep them smaller.
