One of the prized classical Chinese cultivars, written about in poems from the T'ang Dynasty, more than 1200 years ago. Silver-red in bud, 8 in. flowers open to flame red petals. Its unusual name comes from Chinese alchemy and magic. A wonderfully fragrant flower, blooming an intense color of red that can be seen from far away in the garden. This specimen plant is currently about 3.5 ft. x 3.5 ft. when in leaf, will grow to 4 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide at 10-12 years maturity. An exquisite plant for any collection.
