Nippon Chief -American herbaceous peony This dark-red-pink flower with yellow stamens stands on erect stems that don't need any staking. Considered a late season bloomer, it extends the peony season to mid-June in our Connecticut garden. Order and reserve now for spring shipping.
First registered in 1931 by the hybridizer Auten, it has graced American gardens for more than 75 years. The anemone form flowers are about 6 inches in diameter. Dark reddish-pink outer petals contrast with yellow-tipped petaloids in the center. Unusual color and form with a light sweet fragrance, great for the cutting garden.
An outstanding American herbaceous peony, recognized by the American Peony Society as a Gold Medal Selection. Very robust plants, blooming size.

As a general rule, herbaceous peonies don't bloom in zone 9, though we do know of people who grow them in areas of northern California.
