Chaenomeles Japonica
Symbolic flower of Chinese New Year, this deciduous shrub grows 3 feet tall with striking clusters of 1/2" flowers.
Order for early spring shipping.
Native to northern China and Japan, where it blooms in April. It is outstanding for its coral-red flower color and fragrant small, 1" yellow-green fruits in late summer. The fruit can be used to make preserves, or traditionally, to fragrance a room. In our Connecticut garden, it blooms in May. Often planted as a hedge in full or half sun. Tolerant of various soil types, pH 4 to 6.5, USDA zones 5-8.
